The radio for me is just for emergency. Although I haven't tried to transmit on it, I pick up the coast gaurd and other nearby vessles just fine.

Comments about Icom M88 Mini Handheld VHF Radio:
The unit is malfunctioning (wild displays) after about 300 hours of intermittent exposure to salt spray, mounted on the center console of a skiff. Debating whether to replace or repair. The cost of an estimate from ICOM, with shipping, will be about [$]if I decide not to repair it. [$]/hr to repair, plus parts and a new battery, so I'll probably scrap it.This IC-M88 has never been submerged and has been pretty well maintained with fresh water rinses, but there is corrosion under the battery. That might or might not be the source of the problem, and it should not have happened.

Comments about Icom M88 Mini Handheld VHF Radio:
I have had my ICOM M88 for 3 years now. I like the size and its superior battery life (it can hold a charge for a year on stand-by). Mine has been repeated submerged when rolling or sculling my sea kayak with no adverse effects (just fully rinse in freshwater after each use).
There are a lot of these M88 in use in the sea kayak community (along with the ICOM M72). I have only heard of two failures and ICOM promptly fixed/replaced those units. On the other hand the Standard VHF units have a poor reputation with kayakers. They appear to have a high failure rate after submersion.

Comments about Icom M88 Mini Handheld VHF Radio:
I bought this "submersible" radio and the first time it was dropped in SHALLOW water, the face clouded up and it ceased functioning entirely. When it was working, it had very limited range as well. Not at all as represented. Now I'm trying to get [...] to help straighten it out. We'll see how THAT works.
